We're not your average brokers. And that's a good thing.

Lauren Burk

Client Coordinator

Early Years: Girl Next Door

Lauren lived in the same house in a small town outside of Baltimore since birth. "It's the type of town where everyone knows everyone." Lauren went on to don the Catonsville High Comets uniform, playing lacrosse her freshman and sophomore years and field hockey all 4 years. At Salisbury University, Lauren juggled a major in psychology, intramural field hockey and softball, and a whole lot of (a-hem!) "study time" at her family's nearby Ocean City condo. However, our Lauren is not one to build sandcastles in the air. To prepare for the global stage, she studied in Edinburgh, Scotland during her last college semester. "It's the coolest city ever!" She also studied in Barcelona, Spain while in grad school.

What we know about Lauren: Industrial Strength

Undergraduate degree in hand, Lauren set her sights even higher. "The best decision I ever made was to pursue a Master of Science degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Baltimore," she explains. She received a fellowship with the Schaefer Center for Public Policy at UB and worked there part-time while a full-time student. "It was exhausting, challenging, and worth it," she notes. "I see such potential between employee benefits and IO psychology here at EBS."

Fun Facts

The Travel Continues: I've traveled to 6 countries and in 2016 went to Banff National Park in Canada and Glacier National Park in Montana. They were the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

Sing It Loud: I used to write my own songs and sing them at coffee houses...that was my chance to become famous!

The Fire Within: I Love camping! We had a huge family/friend camping trip every year for 16 years but stopped due to a change in the drinking law in Maryland State Parks. This year, we're toting our coolers to West Virginia!

New Wave: The guys in my family are all surfers and so was I when I was younger. I stopped after an accident 4 years ago. But at least I caught the wave!

Jayson Hudgins

Client Advisor

Early Years

Jayson grew up in Goldsboro NC, has four siblings and graduated from Spring Creek High School. Growing up, soccer and tennis were his rackets. By junior year, his tennis team made state finals and college soccer and tennis recruiters came 'a knocking. However, Jayson knows his priorities (a reason to love him) and instead opted to focus his energies at a large party school with a big football atmosphere. At East Carolina University, Jayson majored in Distribution & Logistics, minored in Business Administration, joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon and played club soccer. In the end, he defeated "all odds" by graduating in 4 years with a job right out of the gate.

What we know about Jayson

From wanderlust to growing roots.

Jason has called Baltimore home for 7 years and lives in the 'burbs of Harford County with his wife and twins. But initially, he wanted to escape the small town feel and eastern NC. "I packed up and took an outsides sales role in Orlando." His first real world job experience was with a company in the construction equipment industry. Later that year, that company transferred our hero way up north to DC and he later landed a sales role for a 3PL broker in Baltimore. For just under 5 years, he then worked in the international supply chain at Under Armour and helped the brand expand internationally.

Fun Facts

Square peg. I can solve a Rubik's Cube in under 2 minutes.

International Affair. I've been to 5 different countries and 3 continents in the past 2 years and plan on hitting all 7 continents. Two to go!

You can take the boy out of the South, but... The shortest way to my heart? Bojangles and sweet tea.

Seeing Red. I was issued a red card in high school before the game even started! I mooned the other team as their bus arrived. Who knew you could be red carded during warm-ups?

It's All Chinese. I took a mock Chinese CPA exam online while in Shanghai. It was a joke, but I passed!

Sam Wheeless

Client Manager

Early years: Down on the farm

Born and raised in Maryland, Sam has lived in Baltimore and Monkton, where she grew up on a horse farm. Ah, the days of swimming and horseback riding! Don't fool yourself, though. The two sports take a lot of discipline and commitment, which Sam put to good use during her Business Management studies at Loyola University. As if that wasn't enough of a workload, this go-getter also seamlessly juggled college life and earning her BAA with work as a manager at a Mexican restaurant! ĦAy, caramba!

What we know about Sam: Her interests get interesting!

Prior to joining EBS, Sam was an account manager at The Warner Companies. She is an animal lover who volunteers at Baltimore County Animal Services. Sam loves memoirs (especially those written by David Sedaris). Not enough for you? She also makes a mean veal marsala! Sam enjoys cooking, trying out new restaurants, hiking and going to Spin class. Her love of high heels sends her tall frame into the clouds! Just don't talk to her before she's had her morning diet coke - Sam is so not a morning person!

Leo Gallagher

Managing Partner

Early Years

Leo is definitely one to learn from experience. Case in point: at age five, a curious bear followed Leo and family for several hours during a hike in Yellowstone National Park. When 6, he was separated from his family while traveling in San Felipe Mexico-at 10:00 p.m. (couldn't find them for hours). After all of that, Leo figured, why not hitch a ride to Tijuana Mexico in the trunk of a 1977 Chevrolet Impala to hang out with friends? Just seemed natural. While traveling with his family in Paris at age 21, Leo crashed a private party on Thanksgiving holiday (he knew not one stich of French but befriended another party goer and hung out dancing until dawn). But this kid is sharp. As an adult, he avoids crashing parties, Mexico, bears and car trunks! (Truth or Dare?)

What we know about Leo.

Life on the bright side has its benefits.

Not one to choose traditional ensembles, Leo prefers bright complements to his attire. A purple stripe here, a happy print there. But life on the bright side comes with careful planning. His approach to benefits is much the same. With 14 years in health and welfare under his belt, Leo joined partners Robert and Ryan at what was once Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Their partnership grew a small "Mom and Pop shop" to the fastest-growing benefits office in the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and Leo lead negotiations to purchase the company in 2010, forming EBS of Maryland.

Leo earned his stripes on the ancillary carrier side selling group disability, life and dental contracts for Assurant Employee Benefits. Prior to his benefits career, Leo spent five years as an Area Sales representative, Territory Manager and Assistant Channel Marketing Manager for Black and Decker Hardware and Home Improvement Group for their Home Depot Account.

When he is not working, Leo enjoys spending time with his wife, cooking, playing golf, and traveling.
