Our Team

Brian Matz

Vice President of Sales

Early Years:

Team work: that what it's all about. Well, we've got your man. A Towson native, Brian graduated from Calvert Hall College, where he was an All-State baseball player. He played varsity basketball, too. Before you could blink, it seemed Brian was all grown-up and attending Clemson University on a baseball scholarship. Before EBS signed him on first-string, he made it all the way to the pros - under contract with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals). What does seven years in the big leagues earn you? Perseverance, communication skills and leadership qualities. That is, if you're keeping score.

What we know about Brian:

Hitting "Plan B" out of the ballpark.

When shoulder surgery ended the possibility of an MLB career, Brian completed his education at the University of Baltimore, graduating with a Business degree. Next to the plate? A career in insurance - with a goal to someday own his own business. In 2007, he affiliated with the group that is now EBS of Maryland, where it's safe to say that he still delivers a great pitch. But his biggest hit came when he married wife Christian in 2014, and happily settled in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood.

Fun Facts

First man on. I worked for Under Armour during off-season as one of just 20 employees - I helped make them what they are today!

Stand up straight. At Military School elementary school, I was voted "Most Admired Cadet" by classmates and as a 1st grader, named the school newspaper The Cadet Copy.

Pujols, schmujols. I once struck out Major League All-Star Albert Pujols in a spring training game.

Game On. I am a fiercely competitive golfer and bocce ball player.

Kevin Grace

Vice President of Sales

Early Years

Kevin grew up in Crofton Maryland, and it's safe to say his parents wanted him to experience a devout Catholic education. Kevin attended St. Pius X grade school, Dematha High School and graduated from St. Mary's High School (whether he ever experienced "the ruler" we have no idea). Kevin lettered in football, lacrosse and wresting, then went on to Salisbury University, where he made one of his toughest decisions ever - to put sports on hold to concentrate on earning a business degree.

What we know about Kevin:

He's practically the EBS mascot.

Kevin, a seasoned employee benefits consultant and top producer, has been recognized for his ability to develop new business in a consultative sales process. He also delivers high-quality, cost-effective creative solutions and services that result in many of EBS's many long lasting client relationships. How does Kevin manage all of this? Well, we humbly admit Kevin's extensive employee benefits knowledge includes (but is not limited to) plan designs, cost containment strategies, alternate funding, market trends, ACA compliance, technology decision support analytics, and technology based employee communications, so he juggles with ease and professionalism. He hopes to leverage his extensive charisma in his bid to become the next Oriole Bird mascot.

Fun Facts

I was the high school prom king. True.

I once held the record for the 6 and under backstroke. Crofton Swim and Tennis Club has never been the same.

I love any outdoor activity. Trail running and mountain biking are my favorites, but toss the coin and I'm in.

All of the mushy stuff is reserved for my family. To me, spending as much time with my young family as possible is the definition of quality time.

Susan W. Bryant

Vice President, Client Advisor

Early Years

Born and raised in Baltimore, Susan graduated with a B.A. from Goucher College in Towson -- and being the Marylander-at-heart that she is, decided to keep her considerable skills In-State. You're welcome.

What we know about Susan

Susan first entered Insurance as a Group Sales Representative for Sun Life Financial in 1995, became Director of Broker Sales for Central Maryland Insurance Company and was welcomed as Director of Group Insurance at First Financial Resources in 2004. During the company's 2013 transition to Wealth Preservation, Susan became Vice President, Employee Benefits.

What you'll love about Susan

As far she's concerned, customer service is the cornerstone of a good business model. "In today's market, there's shrinking choice and little differential between what brokers and agents bring to clients in terms of insurance products. So my goal is to find the best value for clients (that's you!) and then provide exemplary service."

Susan is also Life and Health Licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, and is an RHU Candidate.

Fun Facts

Two boys, an insurance career, and a commute. I live with my two sons -- way out West in Howard County. And love it.

Ten-hut! I was in the Army after high school. (Salute if it feels right.)

Competition rocks. Field hockey and horseback riding in college. Then tried deep sea fishing and won a compeition my first time out. Now I'm on a basketball team to keep my competitive edge.

Play it again, Sam! My kids are 16 years apart. Keeps it interesting!

Erin Keeler

Client Advisor

Early years

Erin grew up in the small coastal town of Mashpee, Massachusetts on the island of Cape Cod. Growing up as middle child between two brothers helped shape the determined personality she holds today. Growing up with a love of winter sports Erin decided to head north to a small state college in the mountains of Vermont.

What we know about Erin

Upon graduation, Erin jumped right into the insurance industry as a group rep for the top disability carrier known as UNUM. After 10+ years as a wholesale group rep, Erin decided to take a leap and start her own business. After many years of managing her own employee benefits firm Erin decided to join the EBS team in 2013 to take advantage of all the services, tools and resources that are now required to stay a front runner in this ever changing industry. With now close to 20 years experience, Erin's clients say her attention to detail, industry experience along with a strong ability to deliver solid solutions are most important to them when managing their benefits program. Erin truly enjoys helping her clients with all aspects of their benefits. As part of the EBS team she is very excited over the opportunity of growing our presence in Eastern NC.

Fun Facts

She's a triple threat. I can still pull off a triple axel in any ice rink so bring it Dorothy Hamill!

She kills it at the mic. I'm an undiscovered local Karaoke celebrity.

She has a Swede tooth. I eat on average 3,450 Swedish Fish per year.

Nick Mafale

Client Advisor

Early Years

Word on the Street was that young Nick was a good all-around athlete. But he chose to focus most on golf. Nick grew up with an older sister in the farm-rich town of Street, Maryland and graduated from North Harford High. During his senior year, he helped lead his golf team to second place in the High School State Golf Tournament. He then accepted a golf scholarship to play at Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware where he was voted co-captain of the team his senior year. Three Division II National championships and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management later, Nick proved he was mentally tough, a team leader, and the hardest worker you will ever meet. Add to these traits his strong business acumen, and we believe we have a winner!

What we know about Nick

Leaving after the front 9

Golf will always be Nick's passion. Yet after sharing his love for the sport as an Assistant Golf Professional at a country club, he realized he would rather play than work with golf every day. "Combining the lessons I learned from golf and business skills to a company like EBS is a dream come true," he admits. As for us? We're sure the confidence and poise he developed while competing in high-pressure golf tournaments will guide him to success as his future progresses. Let's tee up!

Fun Facts

Birdy watcher. I still hold the record at Wilmington University for the lowest tournament score (66) and most birdies in a single round (9)

Playing through. I threw out my arm pitching in baseball at age 13 and was diagnosed at age 17 with Type 1 diabetes

The calm in the storm. I received the sportsmanship award at my high school for best attitude and composure while competing in two different sports (Golf and Basketball)

A real statesman. I completed the Patriot program in elementary school by memorizing every state, significant presidential quotes, and I can still reiterate the preamble to the Constitution

Dylan Burtis

Client Advisor

Early Years: The Good Dirt

It was all rough and tumble for this Long Island prankster. A self-proclaimed "Dennis the Menace," babysitters charged double the going rate for "Dylan the Devil." One of five children, he became quite the wrestler by the time he reached high school (four-year varsity), played lacrosse, and made the Adidas All-American lacrosse team. He also had "an accent so thick, I was asked every day if I was from Boston."

What we know about Dylan: He Cleans Up Well (?)

Dylan went to Towson University, was a President of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated in "only" 5 years. After eight years serving as the Commercial Manager for the family's Stanley Steemer business, it seems that all of the kinks were gone. So off he went into the Insurance biz, where he slaves tirelessly to keep every client relationship fresh and spotless.

Fun Facts

Spot-on decision maker. Dylan had never even seen Towson University before it became his higher learning institute of choice. And sure, he chose it because his sister told him the girl to boy ratio was 67/33. But is there honestly a better reason? Exactly.

Scott Melson

Client Advisor

Early years

Give him an "O!" Give him an "R"! Give him an "I"! Oh heck, let's just say Scott loved going to Orioles games as a kid. Like, practically since birth. He is also the son of a marathon runner, so he had plenty of opportunities to get his Forrest Gump on as a kid. His sporty days continued while attending Damascus High School, including playing baseball and football. To this day, he still loves fitting a long distance run or backpack adventure with friends in when he can.

What we know about Scott

Scott's pretty good at performing "marathon workdays", too. We can attest to that. "I love my job and how it gives me the opportunity to meet new people and help put businesses in a better place," he affirms. With four children under the age of 7, he stays busy at home, too! "Life is insane," he confirms, "And I love it. I'm also an Elder at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church and love to work with people in the congregation."

Fun Facts

Kicking It: I am a "bloody" huge Arsenal Football Club fan.

The Good Life: Scotch, a Cigar, and a fire pit. Makes a night good.

Jump Start:  As a freshman, I joined friends who noticed kids jumping off a bridge in a town that a friend just moved to. A few bloody noses later after jumping off the top, the other kids told us (with wide eyes) they only ever jumped off of the support beams, 40 feet below us!

Harry Driscoll

Client Advisor

Early Years: King for a day

Harry grew up in Tuckerton, New Jersey.  That's the Situation. Although his fellow Shoreheads sprayed on tans and muscled up at the gym, Harry preferred a gentler lifestyle. At Pinelands Regional High School, he made the National Honor Society, read the Bible, and played baseball all four years, becoming team captain his senior year. Harry was pretty studly, too. His fellow classmates voted him Homecoming King his senior year (his very own cousin was the queen)! How did he follow that act? "I went to Stockton State College in Pomona New Jersey, where I played NCAA Division III baseball, was team captain and MVP my senior year, and graduated with a BA in Accounting."  Home run, Harry!

What we know about Harry: Play your cards right, son

Remember that lull after graduation? Here's where Harry excelled as a Jersey man - he worked the casinos as a Blackjack and baccarat dealer! But after two years playing his hand, a call from a childhood friend in Maryland changed his course. "I came down to meet with him, liked his job as a mobile automotive paint technician, moved here, and worked for that same company for four years." He then went out on his own full time before moving on to Moody Insurance, where he learned the P&C biz from scratch. Harry is married to Sharon, whom he met while attending college. "Bless her heart, she has stayed with me all these years. We have two teenaged kids, Samuel and Katie, who seem to have inherited their mom's intelligence!"

Fun Facts

Music In His Soul:  I serve on my Church worship team as a backup rhythm guitar player. I also like to jam out at home and I sing loud (my poor wife and kids)!

He's Devoted: I became a born again Christian when I moved to Maryland and do my best to read verses to my wife and kids and pray for them every day. We're proud members of Fredericktowne Baptist Church in Walkersville, Md.

Chip Off The 'Ol Block? I really like to play golf but my 17-year-old son can beat me by more than 10 shots - every time. Pretty disheartening!

Josh Cobo

Client Advisor

Early Years:

Chip and Putt

At Coastal Carolina University, Josh pledged the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and later graduated with a degree in Economics. He also worked at the Maryland Golf and Country Clubs for eight years and became an avid golfer. Now, if Josh is not traveling or volunteering his time, he is out on the course shooting for a hole in one!

Gone to the Beach

Josh spends practically all his vacation days adventuring in warm, sunny places. He has gone whale watching in Hawaii, swam in a Lagoonarium in Bora Bora, and went off-roading in Aruba. He even swam with sharks in the Bahamas! Yet, no matter where he travels, his favorite spot is still South Beach, Miami.

Fun Facts

Family Ties: With both an older and younger sibling, Josh is your typical middle child.

Kicking Cancer's Butt: Josh has volunteered as Chair for Relay for Life, and he also held the position of Auditor.

And the Lucky Number is: After having a heart transplant on 03/10/13, Josh's lucky number will always be 13.

From the Heart: Josh is a spokesperson for Jump Rope for Heart and an Ambassador for the Baltimore Heart Ball. These programs raise funds for heart disease research, education, and the American Heart Association.
